Solothurn Film Festival

Postby JonKamm » Mon Jan 10, 2005 3:02 pm

“Yello – Elektropop made in Switzerland” is a portrait of the most successful Swiss pop band of all times and includes a number of their international hits and cult videos. Sound experimenter Boris Blank and multi-talented Dieter Meier reflect on their achievements, their teamwork and friendship, offering insight into their method of working. Some 25 years on, YELLO still continues to create new sounds and songs with pure delight in experimentation.

Solothurn – the city

Restaurants, narrow streets and people have contributed to the fact that the Solothurn Film Festival has become an important and popular meeting place. Solothurn (pop. 15,000) is well known for its 'Hospitality and culinary culture', as well as for its lively cultural life and old town, which is free of cars. The architecture in Solothurn contributes in particular to the city's ambience. From 1530 to 1792 Solothurn was the residence of the French ambassadors to the confederation. The lavish baroque buildings, city residences, fountains, churches and towers date from this time. This all contributes to the Festival’s unique ambience, particularly because some of the events are held in the historic buildings.

Since 1980, the "Landhaus" along the river Aare has been the center of the Solothurn Film Festival. Once a landing place for wine transport on the river, the building serves as a meeting place and center for information and documentation during the Festival. The press foyer is also located here, equipped with work and screening stations. The films from the main program are screened here on the first floor. Opposite the "Landhaus" is the "Kreuz", which was the first "alternative" restaurant and hotel run on a cooperative basis in Switzerland. All further 'Events and screening' locations are centrally located and only a few minutes on foot from the train station.

About the festival

In 1966, with a low turnout rate and lack of means and educational opportunities for young and independent filmmaking in Switzerland, the stage was set for a meeting on "Swiss film today". Its success called for a repeat; those who represented a new appreciation for film had found a platform for their films and film concerns in Solothurn. The initiator of the meeting, at that time called the "Film-Gilde Solothurn", evolved into the "Schweizerische Gesellschaft Solothurner Filmtage". Since that time, the occasion has been called the Solothurn Film Festival. In addition, the foundation for a Swiss Film Center was also established in Solothurn in 1967 and, since 1998, the awarding of the Swiss Film Prize has taken place at the Festival.

The Solothurn Film Festival has always been an integral part of the history of Swiss film and socio-political issues. While the program focuses on 'Works' with current films and videos from all four linguistic regions, there are also 'Special Programs' which deal with works from film schools and from abroad, television and co-productions, as well as a retrospective of a particular individual in film industry. In addition, various 'Events', which are associated with institutes and professional organisations, provide the opportunity for discussions concerning the politics of and pending issues in the world of film.

Like no other form of artistic expression, contemporary film reflects the mood of a society. The Solothurn Film Festival portrays the Swiss film production and is therefore at the center of interest of both the media and a broad public. Filmmaking is always a country’s most important cultural export, too. Being a prominent public and media event, the Solothurn Film Festival encourages the development of Swiss film culture by pursuing an active information policy and by offering its help in creating international contacts.

Over the course of the years, the Solothurn Film Festival has established itself as the most important meeting place for Swiss filmmakers, the media and the public. Contacts are made, opinions formed and the basis for new projects is laid here. The increasing number of box office admissions bear witness to continuing interest in "internal affairs".
