I agree with you about mp3. Ogg vorbis is a far better lossy codec than mp3, by the way, if not the best one out there. I first rip CDs with EAC and then compress the resulting wave files with the -q10 flag (average 500k bitrate), I plan to do this with my newly purchased Yello CDs as well.
I'm not too crazy about LPs because I would need to buy both a player and a ripper device (for archiving and greatly increasing durability). I do know of the better sound quality but I don't think it is worth the effort, plus audio DVDs can easily compete with LPs in that aspect so I would be pretty much just buying a player/ripper for a few Yello LPs.
